FOSMAS EVENTS

Our terrific volunteers and great business contacts help keep FOSMAS, our Shelter, and most importantly, our adoptive animals in the public eye and help us find more wonderful people to adopt our homeless animals.  We couldn't be as successful as we are without the energy and support from our volunteers, donors, and event partners. We're working on more adoption venue leads, so if you have any ideas or suggestions, please let us know.

Pet Adoption Fairs

We have many cats and kittens in our foster care or at our Shelter, plus many dogs ready for adoption. Please help them by referring your family, friends, and coworkers to our FOSMAS Adoption Fairs and events, and to our websites: fosmas.org and southcountypets.com.

FOSMAS has a permanent adoption center at PetsMart Milpitas in the McCarthy Ranch Center. Adoption Fairs are generally held every Saturday, or stop by and see our available cats and kittens whenever the PetsMart store is open. If you can help staff this location, please see our Volunteers page.

FOSMAS holds adoption fairs on the 1st and 3rd weekend of the month at PetsMart Gilroy.

We have adoption fairs at other locations such as Purrsnickety (Los Gatos 2nd Saturday), Maria's in Los Altos, and many other locations. See our Adoption Fairs and Coming Events sections, below. You may also call (408) 671-3788 for more information. Many of our adoptable animals are shown on our Adopt-a-Cat and Adopt-a-Dog pages of this website, too.

Adoptions at the San Martin Animal Shelter: The shelter is now open 7 days a week. See our home page for shelter hours and directions. Adoptions end one hour before closing.

2010 Happy Days

SMNA has again invited FOSMAS to their annual Car Show in San Martin. The day's events include the car show, featuring custom and classic cars; music and food; a swap meet, silent auction and a raffle. Depending upon the weather, FOSMAS hopes to be there with some of our adoptable animals. A portion of the proceeds will benefit FOSMAS.

A very special thank you to Sharon Armstrong-Hill for coordinating a new venue for FOSMAS petfairs - downtown Willow Glen in San Jose.  Sharon, MichaelSue and Bob Brown-Korbel, Sherry Gould, Michelle McEwen, and Becky Roque staffed this new site last Sat, and were very impressed with the foot traffic.  We're following up on some adoption leads as a result of this new location, and are excited about being able to go back.  Stay tuned!

We're also looking for other venues to hold petfairs and showcase our adoptable animals, so if you know of any company, community event, or other venue where adoptable companion animals would be beneficial, please let us know.  We had lots of good luck with all the new places we tried over the last 6 months, so we want to continue our good adoption record.

South Bay Home and Garden Show

South Bay Home and Garden Show, Fri June 4th - Sun June 6th. We were recently invited to a new South Bay Home and Garden Show being held on Fri-Sun, 4-6 Jun. These shows are a wonderful adoption venue for our animals and a great way to get the word out about our Shelter, FOSMAS, and our adoptable companion animals. We're very thankful to be invited to this new show.  If you'd like to help, please contact Ava Geddes at ageddes@charter.net by 25 May.

Garlic City Auction, April 10, 2010. Garlic City Auction in Gilroy will again auction several donated items to the highest bidder. The auction preview begins at noon and the live auction starts at 1:00 PM. Phone bids and internet bids are also accepted. Richie Chavarria, owner and auctioneer, will significantly reduce his seller's fee and the remaining proceeds will be donated to FOSMAS. Click on the link GarlicCityAuction for thier home page, directions and a preview of the lots in the auction. We had a lot of fun at the January 23rd auction, and several items were sold for the benefit of FOSMAS. Thanks, Richie! If you have antiques, collectibles, jewelry, or other items that you would like to donate for the auction, please e-mail us at FriendsofSanMartin@yahoo.com.

Previous Events

FOSMAS was recently invited to participate in another new event and venue, Los Gatos' Second Saturday, where the public is invited to come to downtown Los Gatos to shop, eat, and enjoy their wonderful (and very pet-friendly!) town. We set up next to Purrsnickety and Bow Wowser on Santa Cruz Avenue in Los Gatos, so please stop by to see our many wonderful adoptable companions, and meet our great volunteers who make these events so successful!

Thank you to Pam Snowden for referring FOSMAS to the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce and laying the groundwork for us to participate in Second Saturday, to Dianne Anderson who was our initial contact for this event, to Susan Stevens for coordinating our booth with Purrsnickety/Bow Wowser and the SS Event Committee, and to Ellen Wayker and her staff at Purrsnickety/Bow Wowser who made us all feel so welcome. We had 5 adoptions at our first appearance! Thanks also to Dan Holden for referring us to Ricky Critchfield, who recently allowed us to use his Los Gatos Remodeling/Critchfield Construction during the recent cold, wet weather.

Old Navy - San Jose: Friday, Januarty 29th

DATE: Fri, 29 Jan
TIME: Noon - 6:00 PM
PLACE: Old Navy-San Jose, 1600 Saratoga Ave, San Jose (Westgate Mall)
CREW: Sherry Gould, Kim Capps, Serena Bem

Maria's Antiiques of Los Altos- Saturday, January 9, noon to 3 PM. 288 First Street, Los Altos. Our newest venue is at Maria's in Los Altos, which promises to be another good venue for adoptions and PR for our Shelter and FOSMAS.  Volunteers who helped at our first petfair there included Acacia and MichaelSue Brown-Korbel, Rebecca Gallegos, Michelle and Megan McEwen, Paula Myers, and Ashley Shenefiel.  The results - 1 dog adoption by a family who met Sammy, a very sweet dog we brought up from the.Shelter.  The family went to our Shelter on the following Tuesday to adopt him.

Oct. 16th - 18th, 2009  FOSMAS 8th Annual Rummage Sale - Kim Capps chaired our Rummage Sale, and put in a lot of long, arduous hours for our biggest annual fundraiser.  Her efforts were well-rewarded!  With presales, day-of sales, postsales, and extra donations, Kim and her team raised $4,353.35 to care for the 263 animals we helped so far this year; way to go!!  A great fundraiser, and at least 1 dog adoption known to be directly related to the Rummage Sale (a shopper fell in love with one of our Shelter's adoptable dogs, and added her to her family).  Volunteers who helped with organizing, advertising, set-up, staffing, and clean-up were Karen Burch, Rachel and Ken Burge, Linda Cunningham, Sue D'Amico and Pat Brown, Colleen Garrity, Ava Geddes, Sherry Gould, Kathy Hodgdon, Michelle McEwen, Amy and Terry Miller, Paula Myers, Radi Shourbaji, and Peggy Young.  Many thanks to all these volunteers who helped make this a very successful event, and to those who also came to buy treasures.

Sept. 18, 2009 Blessing of the Animals - Debra Tibbs, manager of Garden Accents, invited FOSMAS to participate in the Blessing of the Animals held at Garden Accents.  Volunteers who helped with this event were Michele DeMarco, Andrea Gibby, and Michelle McEwen.  The results - good PR for our adoptable animals, our Shelter, and FOSMAS.

Sept. 24, 2009 Kaiser Permanente-Santa Teresa Fall Festival:  This was a new event and venue for FOSMAS, and proved to be a wonderful place to meet many new animal lovers.  A special thank you to Karen Goodwin from the Kaiser Foundation for contacting our Shelter; Brigid Wasson for referring this lead on to FOSMAS; and to Sue D'Amico, Michelle McEwen, and Becky Roque for staffing our booth, talking with potential adopters, and most importantly, showcasing our kitties and dog who were all looking for their forever homes. The best news: two tortoiseshell sisters were adopted together, and are now keeping their new mom in stitches with their antics. Karen Goodwin is also looking at future Kaiser events where our adoptable companion animals would be a welcomed addition, so this is a great new, and very promising, partnership for FOSMAS.

Sept. 26 – 27, 2009 Taste of Morgan Hill:   Despite the very hot weather, we found a home for one adult kitty, are following up on the several adoption leads from people who came to the streetfest, and will hopefully be able to report about more adoptions in a future update. Many thanks to Acacia Brown-Korbel, Rachel and Ken Burge, Vicky and Melissa Flores, Sherry Gould, Chris Johnson, Cheryl Kern, Michelle and Megan McEwen, Amy and Terry Miller, Becky Roque, Laurie Tindall, and Janel Tomblin-Brown who helped make this another great Taste for FOSMAS!

Sept. 12th – 13th National Pet Adoption Days:  Thanks to PetsMart Gilroy Manager James Conklin, FOSMAS volunteers Diane Norgard, Kim Capps, and Amy Miller for staffing the adoption petfair.  They adopted-out Josh and Flowers to the same home, so they'll be buddies forever.

Sept. 12th – 13th, 2009 National Pet Adoption Days:  Thanks to PetsMart Milpitas Manager Lenore Adams and FOSMAS volunteers Serena Bem, Radi Shourbaji, and June and Janelle Edwards for staffing the petfair, which resulted in an adoption by a couple who fell in love with Yoshi.

Sept. 12th, 2009 Leadership Morgan Hill:  Thanks to Sharron Daniel from Leadership Morgan Hill, and FOSMAS volunteers Kim Capps, Sue Padgett, Laurie Tindall, and Peggy Young for staffing this event.  We received several volunteer leads, and adoption leads for Buster, Lili, and Louie.

Sept. 11th – 13th, 2009 South Bay Home and Garden Show:  Thanks to  Linda Cook from the South Bay Home and Garden Show, and to FOSMAS volunteers Sherry Gould, Paula and Tabitha Myers, Michelle and Meghan McEwen, Becky Roque, Linda Cunningham, Rachel and Ken Burge, and Betty Labine and George Klaseman, and Ava Geddes for their help with the Show, where 7 kitties found their forever families!  We're already signed up for the January version of this Show (January 22nd – 24th, 2010), and Linda invited us back for next Septemer too, so this is a wonderful venue to showcase our furry buddies.

7TH ANNUAL HAPPY DAYS: CUSTOM AND CLASSIC CAR SHOW, August 15th, 2009

A very special thank you to Sylvia Hamilton and the whole Happy Days Custom and Classic Car Show Team for inviting FOSMAS to participate on Saturday, August 15th. What a fun event!  Cars, food, friends, and especially animals, what could be better? We had lots of visitors to our booth throughout the day, and many people checked out our sweet little waifs looking for a new home.  And the best news?  One of the dogs we brought from the Shelter got adopted.  A fireman who was at the Car Show sent his wife several pictures of Chiclet, then they drove from Fresno (!) on Sun to adopt her from the Shelter.  That's a determined adoptive family!  Thanks to all of the FOSMAS volunteers who helped make the Car Show a very successful event:

Linda Binder
Vicky Flores
Darrin Huff
Betty Labine and George Klaseman
Michelle and Meghan McEwen
Amy and Terry Miller
Paula Myers
Lynne Steed and family
Laurie Tindall
Ava Geddes

RUN FOR THE STINKIN' ROSES

Another big thank you to the South Valley Running Club for their generous donation last week to FOSMAS from their Run for the Stinkin' Roses.  The Run raised $549.68 (including donations) for our animals. This is the third year SVRC partnered with FOSMAS, and we're looking forward to many more years of this very productive partnership.  The SVRC team is a wonderful group to work with, and they truly love our animals and what we do to help them.  You can learn more about their group at www.svrchome.org .
We greatly appreciate SVRC's dedication, help, and sponsorship of this Run, and are thankful for their generosity and concern for our animals.  We also want to thank new FOSMAS fosters Lisa and Randy Hooks for donating their ambulance and paramedic services during the Run, and the following FOSMAS volunteers/supporters for helping on the course and at the central point:

Peggy and Valerie Brown
Rachel and Ken Burge
Kim Capps
Michelle Chan
Doris Kanemura and Chris Moniz
Laurie and Nick Tindall
